nuclear isolation of India is formally over after 34 years
01-Oct-2008 / ( General - Previous | Next | Last )

The end of 34 years of nuclear isolation of India was formally marked when a cooperation agreement was signed between India and France for supply of French reactors and nuclear fuel.

The agreement was signed after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and French President Nicholas Sarkozy in Paris.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that India is likely to enter into similar agreement with other European countries soon.

Speaking on the agreement, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that it would take some time before the agreement with France or any other country with whom they may be signed to become operational.

France has beat the US and become the first NSG country in signing the nuclear cooperation pact. Lawmakers of United States, the initiator of the NSG waiver, are still pondering over the issue.

The US House of Representatives has approved the Indo-US nuclear cooperation agreement while Senate is likely to take up the United States-India Nuclear Cooperation Approval and Nonproliferation Enhancement Act for discussion when it convenes today at 10am (US time).
