Sushil Kumar gets 2nd medal for India at 2008 Beijing Olympics

India had a great day at 2008 Beijing Olympics on Wednesday - wrestler Sushil Kumar won a bronze medal while boxer Vijender Kumar won his quarter-final bout against Carlos Gongora of Ecuador assuring a medal for himself.

The medals tally for India now stands at 1 gold and 1 bronze. After a long time, India has won 2 medals in a single Olympics. Before this, India had won 2 medals in 1952 at Helsinki - gold in hockey and bronze in wrestling.

Sushil Kumar, a Chief Ticket Inspector in Northern Railway, won his bronze in the Men's Freestyle 66 kg category.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has announced a cash reward of Rs. 55 Lakhs for him and a promotion to the post of Assistant Commerical Manager for the 26 wrestler. Another cash award of Rs. 50 lakhs was announced for him by Sheila Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi.

The President, Vice President and Prime Minister of India and several other leaders congratulated the young wrestler for getting India its second medal in the 2008 Olympics.

Wednesday, also, saw India on its way to another medal. Boxer Vijender Kumar beat his rival Carlos Gongora from Ecuador in Middleweight Boxing to enter the semi-finals of the event.
