19 people survive Madrid air-crash that left 153 dead

A Spanair aeroplane crashed in Madrid killing 153 people. According to sources 19 out of the 172 people on board have survived the crash.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 2:45pm local time. Flight JK5022 was taking off from Madrid on its way to Las Palms in the Canary Islands when the incident occured.

The MD-82 aircraft with registration EC-HFP crashed into the ground during takeoff and burst into flames. Spanair has said that the ill-fated flight was carrying 172 people - 162 passengers, 4 passive crew members and 6 flight crew - on board.

Spanair, a Spanish airline is owned by SAS Group (Scandinavian Airlines).
