Pervez Musharraf quits are President - Rumors are that he has left Pakistan
18-Aug-2008 / ( International - Previous | Next | Last )

Reports have come in that President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan has left Pakistan ahead of the impeachment motion that the political parties of Pakistan were about to move against him today.

The ruling coalition had announced last week that it would bring in the impeachment motion against Pervez Musharraf in the National Assembly.

Pervez Musharraf went on air today afternoon on Pakistan television and delivered a emotional speech about himself and the period that he remained in power. He announced in his speech "In the interest of the country, I have decided to resign. The resignation will reach the National Assembly Speaker shortly."

In his speech he defended his actions for all these years and emphasized that all the allegations against him were false. "I have not done anything for myself" he said "Whatever I have done, I have done for Pakistan."

Musharraf had come to power in 1999 after a bloodless coup in which he ousted the then Nawaz Sharif government.

Soon after the speech, there unconfirmed reports that the speech that was broadcast was a recorded message and that the President of Pakistan had already left for Saudi Arab.

The hasty departure of Musharraf can be attributed to the pending impeachment motion against him that the ruling coalition of Pakistan were planning to bring against him.
